  • Opening ‘TARGA video’ codec quicktime files.

Posted by Andrew Brown on November 20, 2012 at 1:52 pm

    Hello everyone,

First of all, I sincerely hope that I have posted in the correct forum.

My father has recently discovered some old quicktime files which we are unable to open, but would be very keen to recover, as they contain some-long lost family video. These quicktimes were created way back in 2000 and are in the now unrecognised format ‘TARGA video’.

Dad’s memory is really, really hazy, but he does remember that the system he used at his old work to create the files used some kind of Blackmagic card and ran on os9.

I would love to be read and convert these files, but have no idea how to go about it, if any hardware is required, or if the format is even still supported. I am currently running Snow Leopard on a 2009 Macbook Pro.

Any advice or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Andrew

My QUICK research leads me to believe it is a Pinnacle codec, not a Blackmagic Design, which sort of makes sense, given the gear that was out at the time.

The days of proprietary codecs were dark ones indeed…

Try mpeg stream clip or downloading the ffmpeg codec collection.

    Good luck!

Thanks for your speedy reply Shaun.

Yes, I think it must have been a Pinnacle… I really have posted in the wrong area, sorry!

Mpeg Streamclip didn’t work, but I’ll try ffmpeg now

I’ve managed to find a few other forum posts around the net from people with the same Pinnacle TARGA problem, and all of the these posters have eventually given up! Things are looking pretty bleak, but fingers crossed!

    Thanks again for your help.

    Hi Gabriel,

Sorry for the late response. I’m afraid I never found a solution!

    All the best,
    Andrew
