I orginally purchased Vegas 4.0 and completed several projects in it. When the time came to burn the projects to DVD, however, I couldn’t seem to find my manual and had not installed or registered DVD architect. After a few months, in a bout of frustration, I decided to re-purchase Vegas, and came home with 6.0. Now when I open these projects in 6.0 the film quality is drastically reduced–the film is blockily pixilated by comparison. Also, the audio seems to be a hair off. Is this just a preview quality or did 6.0 try to modify my original projects and mess with the quality of the film? I messed with the settings and couldn’t seem to fix it. Help!

If you have 6.0 then goto SONY site and upgrade to 6.0D (latest release) and you should be OK. Projects from 4 or 5 should be fine in 6 just not the other way around.

I’ve opened up projects in Vegas 6 that I did in Vegas 3 without any quality issues. All I can think of is that there’s a setting somewhere that you’re overlooking.
When you say that you “the film quality is drastically reduced”, how are you watchng the completed project? Did you burn it to DVD? If so, what template did you use for the render?

It’s possible that I am overlooking something, as I’ve never actually rendered a video yet. There is a noticeable difference, however, between opening the video in 4.0 and 6.0. I haven’t burnt it to a DVD yet. I’m still just previewing the video in the preview window of vegas. What settings should I be using if I plan to burn it to a dvd? (i.e. aspect ratio etc.) Is that the problem? thanks!

When you’re previewing it, is the preview window set to Preview (Auto)?
If so, this would definitely account for the poor quality. This is the default to allow for (as close as possible to ) real-time preview.
Setting this to Best (Full) will show you close to what it’ll actually look like. A number of factors (such as processor speed & the number of FX involved) may severly limit the ability to do full-speed full-motion preview.

Aspect ratio is only a concern if you shot or want to render in 16:9. I’ll leave that subject alone for now.

As far as DVD settings, here are recommendations based on numerous posts here and elsewhere. You didn’t say so I’m assuming NTSC. Replace with PAL if necessary.
Audio portion render: select Dolby Digital AC3 in the “Save as type” window. The default template is fine for now.
Video portion render: select MainConcept MPEG-2 in the “Save as type” window and “DVD Architect NTSC video stream” in the “Template” window.

Render both files to a folder on your hard drive somewhere and you’re ready to create a DVD. You didn’t say if you had DVD Architect or not so I’ll stop here.

Edward Troxel (one of the moderators) has an excellent series of newsletters on his site. I encourage you to download and read through all of them as they contain valuable tips on all aspects of editing, rendering and DVD creation.
