    So…
…Extracted a tape archive of a 2003 fcp project (fcp 3 or 4?). Everything – project file, cuts, render files, etc. – extracted fine. Opened the project file in fcp 7/Snow leopard/Intel Mac Tower. FCP prompted me to save in new format. Did so. Got the prompt about which scaling quality to use and whether I should remove existing render files (NOTE: in my many attempts, I variously tried every permutation possible at this step. No difference).
Timeline opened, everything in its proper place, lots of red render bars ( this project had lots of scaled video – with filters – moving on screen). Went to render. No workee. Always the prompt “FXScript Error: Syntax error”.
    Am I FUBAR?

The problem is the filters and transitions you used in your original project. Reapply different filters or update your original filters to the latest versions.

Duplicate your sequence. On this duplicate, select all, right click and choose remove attributes, then click the filters box and hit OK.

    Does it work now?

Whoa! Like a charm. Thanks much.
