Make a new project and import your project into it. See if you still have trouble.

I was going to ask about DPI depth. For example, if I’m doing video with stills, I typically will down-res a 300dpi photo to 72dpi.

All in all, its a puzzler because your system sounds more than up to the task and you’ve done a bunch of the basics. Kevin’s suggestions of trashing prefs and clean cache is one of my regular suggestions as well.
