I need to digitize some dv footage and I need to do this work on a different G5 than the one where all the project media for this particular project resides.

Problem is, when I open my project file on the other computer, the project opens under the name of the editor who usually uses that computer and it shows bins for that editor’s current project (however, the files in the bins are not associated with any media).

How can I open this project file as “my” project on a different computer than where its media resides? Do I have to create a new user profile on the other guy’s G5 (i.e., the “foreign” place where I’m trying to open my project)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can create your own user settings on that system, or import yours from the other system. All you need to bring over from your system are the bins and the mediafiles. Copy bins in the project folder and move the media to the mediafile folder.

Michael, thank you for your response.

Okay, so I do in fact need to create new user settings on the computer I’ve moved to. I thought that would be the case.

I may be misunderstanding you but I don’t wish to bring over any media files as my only goal on the other guy’s G5 is to digitize some new footage.

I’m thinking I have to bring over the project file with its bins but no media.

    Thanks.

I should mention that I’m using Avid Xpress Pro.

If your settings files are very customized then it will be easier to bring your over. If not, it may be faster to just create news ones under your name on that system.

Sounds like you are relatively new to this platform. Here is a hot tip. If you have custom mapped your keyboard, open it up and take a screenshot. Then when you go to rebuild your settings, it won’t take very long.

I like to rebuild my user settings with every new build of the software. This is an old habit developed through many years of troubleshooting issues with corrupted user settings.

Second hot tip, when you get you user settings where you like them, back them up. It’s a very small file, and one day, when your user settings do go bonkers, you will be very happy you have that backup.

If you’re just wanting to digitize on the other machine you don’t have to bring anything over. Just start a new project, give it the exact same name as the project on your other system, and start digitizing. Or you can bring just the bins over. If you’re going from one version of Avid to another (say Xpress Pro 4.6 to 5.5) you’ll want to make a new project. Carrying projects across upgrades like that has been known to cause problems–carrying just the bins over doesn’t.

    Hope this helps.

    Michael.

Tcurren, thanks for the info. And, yes, I am brand new to Avid. 🙂

Michael, thanks so much. Next time the need arises, I’ll start a new project on the other machine, giving it the exact same name as the original project. Thanks again.
