  • Opening a box?

Okay. So I have a picture of a box, 3/4 view, and I want to fake animate that the top of the box opens up.

So, what’s the best way to make a square in 3d space that will match up with the 2d picture? So then I can turn the lid into a square I can move around.

Create the box top in a 3D layer and use the X, Y and Z rotations as necessary. Before you rotate though be sure to use the Pan Behind tool to move the anchor point to the edge that will be the point of rotation.

I got that part, I was just thinking about how to get the texture on this 3D object to match the 2D background.

But now that I’ve thought about it, it shouldn’t be too hard to take the shape of the 3D layer in perspective, and then transform the corresponding part of the 2D image to fit the full-sized square of the 3D layer. Maybe using morph or corner-pin distort, or something?

You might want to do some tweaking of the 2D image in Photoshop to pull off the top as a separate animatable layer and then create a middle layer that shows the back of the inside of the box once the top is opened.

The 3D rendering should take care of parallax distortions introduced by “opening” it once the top of the box has been correctly mapped to its layer.
