Opening 5.1 project with 5.0.4
Created a project in 5.1 on a borrowed Mac BookPro and wondered if there’s any way of opening same project with v5.0.4 on my old Powerbook? I know Final Cut is a nuisance by not usually letting you do this but wondered if someone out there has a sneaky shortcut way of doing it?

Most apps behave in this same manner. Doesn’t it seem like a logical cost of progress?

You export an XML from 5.1 and then open it in 5.0.4. Not sure exactly how well this works, but that’s the only way I know of.
Or just create a new project in FCP 5.0.4 and import all the media into the project. All the TC, Reel Name info, etc… will come in with the clips.

Your’e right but I think it will only export sequences in XML and not the whole project…links to all used media as well so acts as a form of Media Manager 2 birds with 1 stone etc.

NOT TRUE!
Over the years there have been many releases of Avid that do NOT allow backwards compatability.
Usually these are hardware related, like when they changed from Nuvista to ABVB or from Meridian to Adrenaline.While insignificant “dot’ releases may allow back and forth compatability, the greater the jump, the less likely you are to be able to go backwards.

Photoshop CS has an option which if not selected you cannot go backwards.
FCP is changing the entire file subsystem with each dot release to finally get the Media Manager working. This is why there is no backwards compatibility with each dot release.
