Open Source HD Media Player
Spotted it earlier, can’t find the thread it was on:
Looking for a open-source/freeware media player for Windows 7 that I can view HD without any lag on. I’m sure I don’t have to tell any of you all why I can’t use Windows Media Player to examine footage and videos.
Like I said before: I saw it mentioned somewhere here in CC a while back, but forgot which area it was in, or the name of the software.

Perhaps you’re looking for VLC media player?
It’s open-source freeware, opens just about anything, and is worlds apart from Windows Meda Player.

I’m pretty sure that’s it. At least, I hope so–I just went ahead and downloaded it. Running some of my beyond-SD vids on it–MP always lags on this stuff–to see how it looks.

Carlton, avoid VLC Player with a passion. Although made and sold with the format of Open- Source, the comittee making the software asked for the help of Microsoft. It is apparently stemming from this that VLC Player reduces the amount approved file- types on “Folder Options, View Files” from 155 file- types (for Windows 2,000 Pro) to only 35 types. Rebuilding the original file- names is not a work- practical answer. VLC Player was designed the most to allow the Maedia to be web broadcasted easily, then the creation to be lost by both the maker and the beholder. Pick an editing suite right out of the Cow Forums.

Look into FFmpeg.
It’s what VLC is based off of. Not as polished in terms of GUI, however.
