  • Open FCP file – is it gone?

Posted by Jay Roman on December 24, 2007 at 4:08 pm

Ho Ho Ho! Tis the season. We were recording a championship basketball game (of course) live into FCP when a child walked by and pulled the firewire cable out from the external hard drive while recording. Can the file be recovered?

    Thanks!

I was told to use a Hex editor. Do you think this would work? Is it something a common person could do our should I take it to apple store?

HexEdit is an open-source utility available at
    https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=9366
It is a programmer’s resource for digging into and editing code within a file.
The ReadMe document contains a very explicit warning”
    * USING A HEX EDITOR IS DANGEROUS! *
Be sure to backup your data before operating this program. It is possible to loose the entire contents of a hard drive (or data on any type of storage device) by using this program!

So no, very much not something for an ordinary user to take on. Since your problem is not really an Apple-related issue, I suspect it’s out of the Apple Store’s range of services.
You could try the demo of DataRescue II from Prosoft to see if it might work, or other software data recovery utilities. Worst case, depending on the worth of the material, a recovery service like DriveSavers, for an expensive solution.
