Open AVI-video…
Posted by Morten Friis on October 25, 2006 at 12:08 amHi
I got a new computer and installed Vegas 06 on it… I also downloaded the suggested upgrade. But suddenly I face the problem that I can’t open AVI-files into Vegas… Only the sound track opens! How come?

October 25, 2006 at 3:35 amIf the AVI files are from a digital still camera (such as a Canon), it’s because you don’t have an MJPEG codec.
If the file is from a camcorder, all I can suggest is to install Vegas again. -

October 25, 2006 at 1:57 pmIf you can’t see the video, you don’t have the proper codec installed. First you need to figure out what format of video you have. “AVI” is just a wrapper that can hold many different types of video. Use something like GSpot to determine the actual TYPE of video and then download and install the proper codec for that type.

October 25, 2006 at 10:13 pmthanks…
I downloaded the GSpot, and downloaded missing codecs on my new computer. THOUGH the Gspot tells me on a given videoclip that I have installed the needed codec (and GSpot will render succesfully) I’m still not able to open the same video-clip in Vegas! (only sound). Should I somehow make a specific installing for codecs in Vegas? Or what is tricking me?

October 25, 2006 at 10:38 pmWhere did the video clip come from?
Camcorder (if so, which make/model) or something else? -

October 30, 2006 at 8:26 amStill not…
I have tried to download the proper codec, but I haven’t managed to make it work. Could you give me a direct link to a vfw-codec, that will work?
(I have some videoclips, where GSpot says, no codec are needed (YUY2), but Vegas will not show, the same with DivX movieclip in Vegas)

November 4, 2006 at 1:50 pmThe same here… I decided to try Vegas to see if it worth to switch to it from Adobe Premiere Elements.
I have Intel IYUV VfW codec installed and registered for YUY2 (comes with Windows Media Player VfW codecs pack as part of Windows distrubutive). All applications which require VfW codecs (like VirtualDub) play YUY2 .avi without any problem. Vegas is the only application has the issue.
As a workaround I recoded YUY2 avi to Helix YUV avi with VirtualDub. It is fast and I think is done without qulity loss, as formats differ only by components packing. Helix YUV avi file may be imported to Vegas without issues. Probably Vegas has issues with Intel IYUV codec???
