  • opacity on light wipe…

I have created an animation for a TV show, and over the top of one of the parts I have placed a light wipe. As the wipe comes across the screen, the logo underneath it changes. The only problem is, underneath all of this I left an alpha channel (so later we can insert video of a “preview” of the show)

The problem is… as soon as the black solid containing the light wipe appears in the AE timeline, everything goes black under the logo. This confuses me because:

    a) I have the black solid’s blending mode set to screen (for the light wipe), and when I’m in the AE timeline I see no black underneath. Yet when I export it out as Animation, this black occurs…

    b) I make sure to export it as an Animation with RGB+Alpha, or millions of colors+… and it can’t be any other layer besides that, because when I export the movie without the light wipe, it goes away

Any solutions? If I need to clarify anything let me know. Thanks for your help.

You must be careful when working with blending modes. They only work when you have color data beneath it to blend with. If you just have an alpha channel under it, it won’t work. You will have to key out the black (or apply a matte) and not just apply a blending mode to the layer. Good luck, I hope I have been helpful.

    Hi Jon –

Thanks for the help. I actually figured out another way to do it. In the light wipe settings there are three different “modes” so to speak. I think they are add, subtract, and difference (??)

Anyway, my problem was fixed late last night when I switched the light wipe’s mode. Now the wipe itself looks a little different, but that is something that is only discernible to me, the designer of the package. The black is gone and I am just left with the wipe over top of a logo, which sits in front of the alpha channel. I appreciate the input, but I’m really glad I was able to find a working solution. Thanks
