  • Only some clips need re commpression?

Posted by Paul Gregory on December 5, 2010 at 1:00 am

I have just rendered out my first HD project to M2TS. As it war rendering I noticed that the preview window often displayed the message that no re compression is required. This suggests to me that other clips did have to be re compressed.

I’m wondering as to why some required re compression when others don’t. Since this little test render doesn’t have titles, transitions, FX, etc the only think that might make some clips different is that some were pre trimmed using PMB software that came with the camera.

    Thanks in advance

That is enough to do it and suggests that you should NOT use PMB because it’s changing the clips, perhaps loosing quality in the process. No recompression is required when the source video specs match the output video specs and no FX, cropping, etc. have been applied. I guess the PMB caused the source to change and no longer match the output.

You should be using Vegas for all of your trimming. Use the Device Explorer to get the files directly from your camera. There is no reason to ever use PMB.

    Thanks for that reply.

Can I assume that if I were to render out small segments to M2TS & then reuse these segments in an extended project that the whole project should not need re compressed?

I could imaging wanting to do this with just possible tweaking of the audio once all clips are on time line. If I’m correct then only the audio will be re processed & not the video?

    Thanks in advance

If you render the small segments out to the same format that your final render will be in (and that format can be smart rendered by Vegas) then it should not require recompression. I wouldn’t get too hung up on it. Just edit your video and let Vegas take care of what it needs to recompress and what it doesn’t need to.
