Only a few frames plays then stops
Posted by David Willey on August 6, 2011 at 8:56 amPremiere is giving me fits tonight. I have imported some P2 MXF footage and every time I push play (JKL, space bar or play button with the mouse) in both the timeline or the preview window it stops after a few frames.
I am editing on a MacBook Pro 2.66 Intel Dual Core, 4GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT. It also happens on my Mac Pro 8-core. I have tried it in CS 5.0.4 and 5.5.
The footage looks good as I scroll through through it but will not play. Am I missing a setting? Do I need to do anything with the footage after it is imported to make it work. Any help would be welcomed.
Thanks to all!

Any effects applied to the footage? Have you recently installed plugins?
This often occurs when effects are missing or corrupted.

August 6, 2011 at 4:44 pmNo effects at all, just the raw MXF files. Everything imports and then will not play.

August 6, 2011 at 6:09 pmThanks guys, I tried deleting the com.apple.audio.AggregateDevices.plist file but it is not there. The problem is that I cannot login as the root user while I am on the road. My IT department keeps our machines very tightly restricted. I had them remote in a while ago, login as administrator and still nothing. I did have to delete that file on my MacPro at the office and it worked.
At this point I am switching to FCP and transcoding the footage to QT as I used to. I really want to keep working in Premiere as I like how the interface works, but I need to work the bugs out before I go there full time.
Thanks for your help,
David -

June 11, 2012 at 6:06 pmThe problem was fixed (a little bit) by deleting the com.apple.audio.AggregateDevices.plist file from the root user account. I have done this on both my laptop and desktop setups. The laptop was kind of old and did not like editing in Premiere that much, but FCP was fine. I did have to transcode everything though.
The laptop has been replaced with a newer version and Premiere works great. I still deleted the com.apple.audio.AggregateDevices.plist file though just to be sure.
I hope this helps.

June 11, 2012 at 7:28 pmFor us, the solution ended up being simple. We installed Premiere today on a non-administrator account. When logged out, then logged back in using the administrator account it started working just fine. Strange glitch, but the problem was solved.

September 12, 2013 at 3:39 pmThis fixed it for us:
You must have the preference com.apple.audio.AggregateDevices.plist in the preferences folder. If it does not exist, that is what is causing the problem. In our case, the file was not being created on Premiere start-up because sharing and permissions on the Preferences folder was set to “read only” for the user of that computer. To fix:
Go to HD – Library and single click the preference folder. Select “Get Info”from the file menu. Set the permissions to “read and write” for everyone.
Good luck!
