We’re currently in the process of changing our studio over from PC / Premiere to Apple / FCP. We have a lot of footage that we shot in .AVI format with an HVX200a in onLocation (windows).

What do I need to do to be able to use these .avi’s in FCP? Currently they don’t seem to open. Is there a specific codec? DO I need to convert them all to .mov’s (hope not)?

    Thanks in advance,
    Jason

when you open them and can see them in windows, what codec
    does it say they are?

standard def DV .avi files from a pc should open right up in fcp no problem.
though you may get a warning about non-optimized files.

    Jason,

You will likely need to convert to a quick codec using Adobe Media Encoder on the Windows side. The proper codec depends on the format and which QT codecs are available to you on the Windows side.

For example, while ProRes would be ideal, there’s only a decoder on the windows side, and since your files seem unable to open on the Apple side, you’re kind of stuck.

    Thanks for the tips guys.

I think I have got this down to needing a DVCPRO HD AVI codec for Mac (if one exists).
