  • ONLINING: relinking MXF back to AMA clips

Posted by Brian Wessel on September 13, 2010 at 3:51 am

My film was shot on the 7D (h.264).
I imported them all into Avid via the AMA.
I transcoded them to DNX 36 HD mxf files for low-res offline editing.
I just picture locked and am ready to online back to the original AMA clips.
I tried to relink them, but it doesn’t reconnect.

I have tried all possible combinations of the relink options and still get nothing. I have also tried to re-import all the footage via the AMA and relinking the sequence after that, but still nothing. Can ANYONE please help me? I am in a serious time crunch and didn’t realize this was going to be such an issue.

    Thanks,

    Brian

IIRC, you have to hide the MXF media from the system in order for MC to be able to relink to the AMA files.

Hiding those MXF Mediafiles is as simple as renaming your Avid MediaFiles folders on your media drives to something like “Avid MediaFiles Project X”.

This ‘should’ work, but since all files have identical names and no timecode, it might be not so simple.
    I would definitly first decompose.
Then, sift your bin in a way that you can identify what masterclip comes from what card, might help you sort out the mess.

Next time, use QTchange (download from my site) to give the clips timecode. That will be a huge time / troublesaver.

I thought v5 was able to relink those without the need to have used QTchange on the DSLR-files, Bouke… Am I mistaken?

Oh, and I would definitely not decompose, as you then get clips with different lengths than the originals. Why would you recommend a decompose?

Not sure how v5 relinks back. Is that on original directory name or so?
Must admit, have to test it. (but then again, i have a zillion other things to test…)

Reason to decompose is to be able to know what is used, and to shorten the transcode time it needs to happen at some point anyway.
I don’t think it will matter for the relinking…

But for the OP, just try it with the offline media taken out of the loop as you suggested. Trying that cannot hurt.

    Just ran a few tests.
relinking works if you assign a reelname to both the DNxHD as well as the imported AMA clips.
If you have overlapping timecodes, make sure you assing a different reelname to those clips.

Hide the MXf files from the original transcode. Make sure all the original clips are online via AMA. Clips should relink. Render timeline with a higher resolution for finishing.
