    Hi,
I have a full-res sequence with mostly HDV 1080i60, some DV. I have over 500GB of source material and I’m trying to create a more manageable sequence that I can online from. I have been trying to use media manager to create a new sequence containing clips with just the material I have used plus 3 second handles. I hope to create new master clips, as some of the masters my sequence clips are referencing are huge.
From there, I plan recompress my DV footage to the HDV codec, and any tips on that process are greatly appreciated (should I use media manager or Compressor?). I hope this will help with running smoothcam.
Then, after I have my shots settled, I will export them to Color. After I’ve color corrected, then I will create titles in LiveType and I assume I will have a nicely onlined sequence after that.
Any and all advice is welcome and appreciated.
    Thank you in advance!

Well, first and most importantly, don’t edit anything in HDV for work later with smoothcam and Color… it’s GOP structure gets in the way of a smooth workflow that’s for sure.

Capture it all as ProRes. HQ if there is a lot of fast movement, and standard ProRes if there’s not a lot of movement. you’ll be miles and miles ahead down the line.

Upconvert your DV to ProRes HD, and you’ll find it too works better. HDV is a consumer format and the ONLY thing that ProRes has going against it is storage space.

I was asleep when I wrote the above, but it’s still true.

I’d convert all of what’s in your sequence to ProRes using Media manager… that way you only need to transcode what you’re actually using. Next time, capture any HDV you encounter AS prores and skip this conversion down the line.
