  • Online resources for audio mixing for cinema standard (85dB LEQ)

    Dear audio professionals,

I’m a video editor often tasked with mixing sound for our A/V productions. I have experience mixing stereo sound and complying to the (broadcast) EBU R128 loudness standard of -23 LUFS, using a TC electronic loudness radar meter. Occasionally we also deliver adverts for cinema, but I have no experience with it’s standards. Often we send the mixes out to third parties for conforming to the standard. I have only vaguely heard of the 85 dB LEQ standard and have no idea how to measure or control it. I would like to learn more about it.

Can you measure it using meters much like the loudness one or do you need a specialized setup?
Is the 85 dB LEQ different from the standard for the actual movies in the theatre?
Are there good resources online to help me understand better?

Thanks in advance to those willing to help me out!

This might be a place to start. IDK.

    Don’t worry too much.
Well, concidering a theatre has way more dynamics than on normal TV, your problem is not there.
EBU R128 is a very relaxed standard, most broadcasters allow for short peaks in normal content, just don’t go over -1 (that you never want anyways.)
So, the only thing is loudness. AFAIK, it’s also -23 or at least very close. (I do cinema docs occasionally, and do not notice a difference when I use the TV mix).
Get one or more of your outsourced mixes, measure the LUFS and stick to that. For the rest, just mix to your ears.

(If you do find some specs somewhere, please share them with me / over here.)
