Hello, we will be starting a project that we hope to output data directly from FCP for delivery in .mov formats. Just wondering if there are any recommendations on the best workflow to accomplish this.

Most of our footage is shot DVCam, MiniDV, DigiBeta, or HD DV. Then captured through a deck into fcp. What is the best compression to use that will allow us to output straight from the timeline and skip the online process?

We normally capture DV NTSC through a firewire DVCam deck. Then we go to online to create a DigiBeta master (one of the reasons being we don’t have a DigiBeta deck). But now we have the opportunity to deliver .mov files and are wondering if we can skip this step with the hardware we have.

    Any suggestions?

    Thank you!

    In a word, YES.

That is, of course, if you NEVER, ever have to have a digibeta copy for archive, back up etc. If you seriously ONLY have to deliver a file, then going to tape is pointless.

As for what codec, compression, etc…. shouldn’t that info be coming from your client? Typically, the deliverable specs are spelled out in an appendix to your contract.

well what hardware do you have? if you have big beefy hardware with good fast RAID storage then one might suggest using Uncompressed … but if you have less powerfull hardware and no RAID at all then one is more likely to suggest using DV

Thank you very much for your responses. We have been pondering uncompressed which might be possible, though we don’t have a RAID, but the segments are 2-3 mins long. If not, a .dv stream might be an option.

We are working with the client right now to see what they can take. Actually, as this project is moving into HD mastering, they are trying to figure it out at the same time. Sort of the blind leading the blind…

Any ideas for capturing at the highest possible quality?

Thanks very much for your help.

Yes…but highest quality HD or SD? You’ll need to get a capture card and yes, you will need to get that RAID that Andy was talking about. SATA Raids are good, and less expensive than Fibrechannel.

When you get the capture card (I highly recommend the AJA Kona series…they do HD and SD) and when you capture, capture 10-bit uncompressed.
