I’m doing my first mult-format online with the io and have a couple of questions if anybody can help or has any pointers…

It is SD, with a variety of SD tape sources. I am doing it as uncompressed 10-bit. Delivery is on dBeta.

What is the diference between the “Betacam 525” standard and the “SMPTE N10” standards in the io device selections?

Is there a way in FCP, or through the io, to not allow black values below 7.5 units? FCP only seems to range check, and have filters for high luma and chroma values. I find the scopes mushhy to read.

    Thanks in advance.

Use Betacam 525. SMPTE N10 is not used by Sony or Panasonic. I’ve never had a use for it.

You should be working with black as 0 in FCP. If you are finishing to a digital format, then zero is where it should be. If you finish to Beta SP or another analog format, you’re Io will add the 7.5 setup on output automatically (you don’t need to do anything – assuming you’re in the USA).

    Thanks Tony,

I am in Canada, but we conform to your broadcast signal rules for foreign sales to USA purposes.

I have already digitized using “SMPTE N10” to uncompressed 10 bit. If I output using “Betacam 525” it should be okay??

The master is on Digibeta. If I use the SDI out, will it leave 0 level blacks (similar to Media 100 SDI out)? Do I have to use the component out in order to have the pedestal at 7.5?

Thanks again, and that should be it for questions.

I would move all your footage offline (in the trash) and do a batch capture of it all again with the Betacam 525 preset. Hopefully, you used reel names and have good time code on your source tapes. It’ll be pretty quick if you do.

If you are going out to any digital tape format (including Digibeta) you don’t add IRE/Setup (7.5). That is only for analog. Use your SDI out to the Digibeta deck. If in the future you need to go to Beta SP or another analog tape format, then you can use your analog outputs (component) and the Io will add the 7.5 setup for you (check the Io’s control panel application to verify it is set correctly to do that). Scopes are always a good idea.

If you still feel you need more verification of what I’m saying (don’t blame you). Do a search for something like “7.5 Digi” on the FCP, AJA Io, AJA Kona, and Decklink forums. Seach back for the last 2 or 3 years. You should get a ton of “hits.”

I hope that helps, sorry about the slow response, I’ve been tied up a lot lately with other things.

    Tony!
