  • Online HDCAM edit – what sequence/capture settings?

Posted by Darren Ebert on May 5, 2008 at 10:16 pm

    Good Afternoon,

We have completed the offline edit of a 3 minute video that was shot on HDCAM,then edited using low-res Photo JPEG.

Using Media Manager we are planning to create a duplicate sequence to use to capture and connect the clips to the HDCAM footage.

What sequence settings do we use and what capture preset do we use? The manual isn’t very clear on this.

    Thanks!

whatever you decide works best in your post flow.
This sort of thing is best decided before starting any editing to ensure a smooth operation from start to finish.

use 720P if your footage is mostly 720.
use 1080i if your footage is mostly 1080i.

you could use any of the three:

DVCPRO-HD – if you don’t have much disk space

ProRes HQ – if you have lots of disk space + an intel mac

Uncompressed 8 or 10-bit. – if you have lots more of disk space.

    Thanks for the reply.

    Sounds pretty straightforward.

How, though, do I know if our system can handle capturing uncompressed 8-bit or DVCPRO-HD? I’d hate to rent the HDCAM deck to find out our machine/drive speed is insufficient.

    We’re running:

    Dual 2.7Ghz PPC
    4 GB RAM
    10.4.11

    AJA 2 card

    Fiber Optic RAID drive

    Thanks!

I can tell you with certainty that DVCPRO-HD will work.

If your unsure, run the aja speed test on your disk array.
Also you should figure on having at least 1 Terabyte
free for a 30 minute show and have plenty of room to spare.

Sounds like you might want to just post it in DVCPRO-HD, its
a mature and solid workflow that fcp was tailored for.
