  • Online edit with different time code

    Hello all,

So because I’m poor, I originally transferred my last film from 16mm to digibeta for editing. A year or so later, I was able to transfer it to HD Beta cam, which looks much better. The time code on these two is different, however. What do you think the best way to online this project is?

    Many thanks for your suggestions.

No such thing. Do you mean HDCAM? Betacam is an SD tape format. Just making sure…gotta be specific with us.

Look for the matching frames on both the capture files and the new tape (a slate for example)…and then MODIFY the timecode on the original footage to match that of the timecode of the new tapes. So that the timecode on the matching frame is the same. Do this with all the QT capture files you have.

Then spot check the cut to make sure the timecode has been changed, and matches what you have on that tape. You might have to capture that tape to have access to the footage to do this. A low resolution codec is fine, as long as you can see things. or rent a deck. But once things match, then you can either output an EDL, or media manage the cut for recapture…whathaveyou.

“MODIFY the timecode on the original footage”

You mean changing the timecode on the captured clips (right?). I wasn’t aware you could change the TC once captured, how would I go about doing this?

Also could there be an argument for using edit to tape to insert just timecode on the new HDCam tape. I know it would be in real time but is there any other disadvantages?
