  • one workflow for two delivery formats?

    Hi There !!

I’ve been asked to edit a 5 min (max)of DV footage and add a kind of logo still at the start then just a normal fade to black…
delivery method sd dvd . No problem at all whit this
They’ve just called me and asked for the same footage to be in a file/format that would allow them to play from their website.

Can I use the same timeline and only change the export file in the end?
(I do have an external drive “SATA” to deliver the file for the website.)do I need to know something in particular about their website or I just deliver the file in a particular size and format?
I searched for the workflow related for the website delivery but I found to many related posts after reading 20 I give up, I’ve never prepared footage for the WEB ….
I’ve never charged before ….. The client is a high fashion magazine. So here’s my dilemma, I don’t want to overcharge but at the same time I don’t want to do the job for free.
Can someone give some sort of indication. The last thing I want to do it’s to do the job for an absurd low price only to take the job, and doing so damaging myself and then all other business that know how much to charge.
    Txs in advance

    ciao
    Antonio

    Hey Antonio,
You should contact their Web-master and ask him all the specs for the movie: Format, data-rate, audio..If they want QT, no problem, you have everything in Compressor. If they want WMV or .flv you will need additional software.
Abaout the price, think that, even having your master ready, you probably will spent few hours testing the best quality encoding.

    Mac OX 10.5.2-FC 6.02-QT 7.4.1
    G5 2x2Gh 4GbRAM-BlackMagic Extreme
    PMBP 17″Core2Duo 4GbRAM-AJA ioHD
    JVC DTV-17″
    SONY EX-1 . SONY PD170
..and always a big mess on top of the table.

We tend to provide a H.264 Quicktime movie at PAL Square Pix sizing and let the client’s web people compress it as they wish – it’s a good median between filesize and quality. If they need something else, we do supply these things as FLV sometimes, or a more highly compressed QT (using presets from Compressor or Sorenson Squeeze).

If it’s a while later we normally just do it from our master copy, the only time it’s a real pain is when there is a display aspect change and graphics need to be modified, or when the client wants different graphics. Can also be an issue when small text is involved as it doesn’t survive the compression and needs to be made larger in frame.

We usually have a flat rate for doing it, unless it requires a lot of work or for us to reedit some part of it, in which case it tends to be at studio hourly rate.
