    Well actually two major issues keep me in FCP7. I actually started a project recently that we are delivering a Premiere Project and because of issue 2 I had to switch back to FCP. I am not sure if this was fixed in CS 5.5, but if it has not, adobe needs to fix it ASAP.

    Issue 1: JKL playback performance is just not up to snuff. I feel like I can move faster than Premiere and it freezes up. AVCHD playback, so not sure if it is just the codec, but JKL shuffling just does not seem to be as smith as FCP.

    Issue 2: This is a show stopper, MAJOR Issue. If you have any video that has video levels over 100 IRE, applying ANY effect hard clips the footage at 100 IRE and makes it unrecoverable. I had a white shirt that was not clipped on camera, but was sitting over 100. Apply any CC filter, hard clips at 100. This is verified on external scopes. This is a known issue as I have read, for a while, and adobe refuses to fix it. ADOBE needs to fix this in my mind in order for Premiere to be viable in my head. I don’t always have the time to go to Davinci, and quick corrections should be able to be made in the NLE.

    Issue 1 is most likely the codec in question. AVCHD is a clunky codec and definitely doesn’t have the performance that DVCPROHD or ProRes has.

    Issue 2 is a settings issue – Premiere Pro can be operated in full 32-bit-per-channel, floating point color, but that mode is disabled by default. To turn it on, go to Sequence-sequence settings, and check the box for Maximum Bit Depth. You’ll also want to stick to color effects with the big “32” icon, but that includes almost all the color correction tools (3-way, RGB Curves, etc.)

    Testing has shown that even with Maximum Bit Depth enabled, Premiere will clip any information above 100 ire.

    I’d like to reiterate a point in Karl’s answer:

    The clipping shouldn’t be happening if you’re using effects that have the ’32’ icon in the Effects panel. These are effects that can work in a 32-bpc, high-dynamic-range color space—i.e., they can process and output color with superbright values.

    What effects, exactly, are you applying that are causing clipping? I just tried with the Fast Color Corrector, for example, and I’m seeing color values output above 110 IRE.

    If you’re seeing this behavior with an effect that has the ’32’ icon and you’re working with the Maximum Bit Depth setting in the sequence, then please file a bug with as much detail as possible.
