one effect lasts through the WHOLE video
Posted by Christopher Glenn on December 4, 2007 at 8:39 pmi’m new to after effects, and i’m having alot of trouble with keyframes and effects. i only want an effect to last for about 3 seconds. when i drag an effect over, it lasts through the WHOLE video. i want to set the 1st keyframe to show without the effect. then the 2nd keyframe to show with the effect, then the 3rd keyframe without the effect, showing just the original footage. i did find a way of doing it splitting the footage up, but that kinda defeats the purpose of using keyframes. what am i missing in this whole process please help.

December 4, 2007 at 9:00 pmAn effect will effect the entire duration of a layer unless you make the effect have no effect… confused yet?
For example, with a blur you would set the radius to 0. A blur with a radius of 0 is the same thing as no blur. With levels you would set a keyframe and reset the levels effect to its defaults, which has no effect on the footage.

December 4, 2007 at 9:03 pmyes. for example, i’d like to use lightning for about 5 seconds. i’d like it to start at 1:26.00, and gradually get bigger and fade out at 1:31.00. how do i use a hold keyframe, i haven’t seen anything about that.

December 4, 2007 at 9:42 pmThe technique you would use would depend on the effect and its available properties. Most lightning effects, for example, have a brightness value that you can animate to 0. If you only want to go to and from the effect quickly, without any interpolation, consider using an Adjustment Layer with the effect applied. Trim the in and out points of the adjustment layer to change when the effect appears/disappears.

December 4, 2007 at 10:12 pmYou’re biggest problem is that you’re adding lightning to the clip and not to a new black solid placed above the clip and set to the length you want.
If you insist on trying to do everything on one layer you can always animate the blend with original property which is available on many effects. If it’s not there, then you’ve got to either find something that you can turn off or use two layers. Using Advanced Lightning instead of Lightning you can animate core and glow opacity to zero. Either technique will solve your problem.

December 4, 2007 at 10:43 pmi made the new black solid above the clip, but i can’t get the lightning to show up on the footage. when i double click on the solid layer, the lightning will show up by itself as if i’m trying to solo it. i did make a new shape layer and it shows up but it just kinda dissapears when i try to put another effect in its place

December 4, 2007 at 11:43 pm[beatz2005] “when i double click on the solid layer, the lightning will show up by itself as if i’m trying to solo it.”
Whenever you double click a layer in the composition, AE goes to the Layer Preview instead of Composition Preview…
[beatz2005] “i made the new black solid above the clip, but i can’t get the lightning to show up on the footage.”
If the lightning is showing up on your black solid then you’re golden. You just need to set the black solid to use an additive blend mode like ‘Screen’ or ‘Add.’ If this doesn’t make sense, open the AE help (F1) and search for ‘blending mode.’
