on-line capture from Viper footage
Hello,
We’re in post for a feature horror movie and I need help figuring out if we can do the on-line in house. Here are the specs:(offline)
Shot with the Viper camera onto HDCAM SR tapes at 4:4:4,23.98 PsF 1080
Tapes were duped down to HDCAM 4:2:2, 23.98PsF (offline)
Capturing from Sony J-H3 deck at 23.98PsF through Kona 3 LHe (1080sf23.98) unto a Mac Pro 2×3 dual core Intel xeon, 8 GB RAM, into FCP Studio 2 storing unto a Xserve Raid (7 drives (1 side) at 4.1 TB total)I contacted a tech from Kona and they were saying that we needed scuzzy drives and the Kona 3 card to ingest the footage in-house because our available equipment could not handle the load.
Can anyone shed light on this for me. What equipment would be needed. Should we go out and have someone do the on-line, and if so, can they transfer the captured footage into our X-serve then allowing us to bring it back in house to finish out the color, VFX and titles? Can our system handle the footage after the on-line effectively.

You tried to capture and it didn’t work? I’d think it might be OK with what you have… or get more drives and stripe them in a RAID 0 for faster speed… But if you can’t capture it, you likely can’t play it either so having it captured then transfered doesn’t make much sense.

If you want to capture 4:4:4 from the SR tape, you do indeed need a Kona 3 card. 4:4:4 requires dual-link SDI, the LHe does not support this.
As for the drives, you can run the Kona System Test app to check the speed that you’re getting on the X-RAID. I forget what speed you need for 4:4:4, but I suspect it’s probably a little ways north of 200 MB/sec.
You can get this kind of speed without SCSI drives, but by the time you buy a Kona 3 for around $3k & new drive array for another $5-9k, you could have done your online, including titling & VFX at someone else’s shop.
