I have an older Media Composer using System 7.1., and I am trying to prepare for a mix. My mixer is a long established sound engineer with his own mix studio, but he has no knowledge of AVIDs so he can’t help me. I have prepared two OMF files for him. One was in OMF 2, the second was in OMF1. I made 100 frame handles for each of them. The OMF documents will load into my much newer Avid Express editing system perfectly and they sound fine. However, when they are loaded onto the mixing system at my mixer’s place, the sound cuts don’t work properly. Either the outgoing piece of sound will cover over the head of the incoming take, or vice versa. Somehow the edits are not showing up clearly to his machine. I don’t see any way to solve this. Perhaps make the OMF without handles? Is there perhaps a setting that my mixer should be aware of on his machine that will accept older materials? Are there mix studios that are AVID based anywhere?

I will deeply appreciate any suggestions. My mix date is Feb 5th.

    Thanks, Ross

There where issues with MC 7.1. Often going to 7.2 resolved it. If this is not feasible (which is likely) you may want to open the open the file in a modern Avid and exporting it back out again.

Thanks for the reply. I loaded the OMF2 from the AVID MC 7.1 into my Avid Express, where it plays perfectly fine, and then I did an export/coonsioldiation from that using OMF2. My mixer loaded it just fine, but it shows the same problems with the edits not doing their job. Right now I am making another OMF2 from the Avid Express, but this time with NO HANDLES. Perhaps that will do the trick?

So you think the MC 7.1 is the culprit? If I upgrade to 7.2, will it play all my digitized material? I have hour and Hours and hours in this project — a mini-series.

Thanks so much for your input. I really appreciate it!
