Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy OMF 2GB limit

  • Posted by Aj Epstein on June 24, 2009 at 11:08 pm

    Hey All,

I’ve got a 3 camera shoot that I did that’s just over an hour long.

I’m trying to export all 6 mono audio tracks into Logic or Pro Tools, but when I try to export as .omf it comes up with an error telling me that the file will exceed the 2GB limit.

I am able to workaround this by turning off the tracks in FCP and then exporting, but this is a bit cumbersome.

Does anyone know of an easy way to export long form multi track audio from FCP into Logic as discreet tracks in a pass?

    THX!

There is no 2GB Limit. Your hard drive is probably formatted in Windows format instead of Mac.

Uh…YEAH, there is. OMF exports have a 2GB limit. Always have. Very old format is one reason.

Solution is to either break up your sequence into 20-30 min chunks, or OMF each track individually.

    Hi Walter,

I tried selecting a different drive and get the same message
“The resulting file would be greater than 2GB in size and is not currently supported”

    Thx!

Is there a way to export all audio tracks at once other than via OMF?

    thx!

There is? I guess I’ve not had the pleasure of hitting that. I’ve sent 35 minute sequences off for audio mixes that had 10 tracks of audio. Never hit that problem. I guess we never crossed that 2GB limit before. Oh well.

Nope…I have always done OMF and in multiple parts.

XML? But that doesn’t embed media…it refers to the media where it is.

“Is there a way to export all audio tracks at once other than via OMF? ”

    yes.
1 open the sequence settings, go to the “Audio Outputs” tab
2 set up the outputs so each track, or pair of tracks, has a dedicated audio output.

3 back in the sequence you patch each track to an output by right clicking on or near the lock icon on the left of the timeline.
(this is boring but you really have to double check this as there is no external indication of what tack is patched to what output)

    4 export as AIFFs.

    SPLITTING OMFS:

FWIW, rather than splitting horizontally (as tacks), i split my sequences vertically, by copying the sequence into smaller segments.

this works for me as i’l have disproportionate “volumes” of audio on each track:
    heavy dial use on A1,2,
    bit less on A3,4, A5,6
and lots of air on the fx & music tracks.

your situation is different, i know.

    cheers,
    nick

You get around the 2GB limit on Avid by linking to media instead of embedding it in the file. That option is not available on FCP

Just a note.. AAF’s, which is the new and improved format, has no limit – too bad FCP doesn’t support it yet! I believe Automatic Duck has software for it.

Perhaps FCS 3 will add that ability.. whenever that decides to show itself!

    Hi Nick,
I have a few questions in regards to your comment about exporting from Final Cut 7, etc. But let me first tell you what I’m doing in brief. My picture is ready and locked in Final Cut 7. I want to take the audio from the project and bring it into Pro Tools for editing, ADR, etc. Then I will bring the finished audio from Pro Tools back into Final Cut 7, sync it with the picture and then export it for DVD, Youtube, etc.

In the comments from this article you listed the steps for doing it as AIFFs. This is great because my files are too Huge to do it as OMFs.

    you wrote:
“2 set up the outputs so each track, or pair of tracks, has a dedicated audio output.”
What exactly do you mean by that? I’m not clear as to what a dedicated audio output is.

I also noticed Under audio settings (pic below) you can choose :
Default, Built In, and Pro Tools Aggregate I/O. I’m assuming I should choose Default??

    You then wrote:
3 back in the sequence you patch each track to an output by right clicking on or near the lock icon on the left of the timeline.
(this is boring but you really have to double check this as there is no external indication of what tack is patched to what output)
I clicked on audio outputs and made sure 1&2 are selected. Is that what you meant, does this look correct:

Sorry to be so thorough, I just want to be sure. I live by the saying: If you don’t have time to do it right, then you have time to do it twice.”
THANK YOU for any and all of your time, and efforts with this. 🙂
