Hi, guys. I have an opportunity to snag an old Mac G4 to use at home, and I’d like to buy an old version of AE for it. Can someone tell me what version will work on the G4, and possibly where I could find it? Thanks,

to find older versions of ae, you’ll likely be looking on ebay… you can check at software retailers to see if they have older versions on the shelf or in the warehouse…

that being said, i had one of our older g5s go down a few months ago. it was running osx 10.4 and cs3. i had to replace it with an older g4 (dual 1ghz mdd, 4gb ram) and it ran cs3 quite well for several weeks… a bit slow, but it did everything we needed it to do and didn’t crash once. in addition to installing the software, i had to install a pci sata card and decklink card from the g5 and it worked just fine…

cs4, however, is intel only so you will need to stay with cs3 or lower. if you only have a single processor in your g4, and if you can find 7.0 for less than cs3, 7.0 may be a better choice… the biggest benefit of cs3 was multiprocessing, which obviously you would need 2 or more cores to use, but cs3 won’t hurt and there are a few extra things cs3 has (the puppet tool comes to mind)…
