I have some old SD pal video shot in 4×3 to which I wanted to add many stills of much higher resolution. to retain the quality of the stills I thought of rendering the project out as MPEG4 & make the project progressive. I know that the old MPEG2 footage can’t really be improved but since I was going to have ago anyway I decided to use the pan/crop tool to make the video 16×9.

I also wanted to see how much change could be make using FX filters like sharpen by creating a side by side comparison. I put a few clips on the time line then duplicated that line of video onto another track. I thought that I might end up with a video which I could examine on my big screen TV. I then used the cookie cutter on one side of the video as well as applying the FX filters. In the small preview window i tried different settings from very little change to too much.

Even though I can sometime see considerable difference between the left & right portions of the video when viewed as a preview I find that when I render out a small portion & play it on a big screen I can’t see any difference at all. Why should this be so? I could understand this if the sharpen filter was working only on the other side of the video. The other thing is that even though I set the output to be progressive scan because of the stills, I can see interlace lines. Where am I going wrong?

    Thanks in advance
