Old Timey Fade Out
Hey everyone,
I’m running fcp 5.1.4 and working with a 60i hdv sequence.
I’m looking to do one of those old fashioned fade outs where the corners of the screen fade to black and end up moving towards the center in a circular form. Kind of like an iris transition but backwards. ( I tried reversing an iris transition but that didn’t do the trick)
It’s kind of like the way that old tv shows used to fade out like I love Lucy and even Loony Tunes.
I can’t find anything in my stock FCP or even in Motion. Can I get a plug in or something for that?

What you describe is exactly what an oval iris is. What’s not working for you? If you reverse the iris it should do what you want. What happens when you do that?

Use the oval Mask Shape filter, in the Matte section of the video filters. Keyframe the center and scale as needed.
Is that what you mean? Like the the Bugs Bunny cartoons?

It’s still not quite what I’m looking for though.
The standard Oval Iris is perfect for the beginning of the clip. It Starts with a black frame and “opens” the screen from a circle in the middle of the frame.
At the end is where the problem is. When I reverse the Iris, it starts with a black frame and ends with video. Same as the beginning of the clip only backwards. I’m looking to start with video in the frame, and have the iris circle close in from the edges of the screen and end with a black frame.

double click the effect as applied in the timeline. there is a small button in the effect controls, directly to the right of the Start and End percentage sliders … that button toggles the”direction” of the effect.
press it then review the applied effect in the canvas. is that what you want?

one thing the old time iris out did was to close part way,
stop on something in the frame, (a person or face)
then close all the way down.for this, i’d recommend the free Marcus Herick “Vignette” plugin.
it’s a cool plugin to have anyway,

Well I learn something new about Final Cut every day!
That button to the right of the start/end percentages is exactly what I was looking for.
When I said I “reversed the iris”, I should’ve been more descriptive. What I did was simply switch the 100% and 0%.
All I needed to do to get the desired effect was to hit that button.
