I’ve been on a mission to get one of our old Avid Meridien systems out of mothballs and back online for an upcoming project.

    Here’s what I have:
    MC 9000
    Avid MC v11
    running on Mac G4
    OS 9

While everything still runs fine, I’d like to get it on OSX so that I can add an ESATA card to the mix. Also, I am running a similar MC1000 system with v12 and would like to be seamless with that.

So here is my question; with support for this beast having run out LONG ago, I’d like to try to get the most recent software release for the 9000 and try to get running in osX (most likely 10.2).

I have a feeling that if I install the V12 software from our MC1000, the dongle will need to be flashed and I don’t have those flash files.

I also am a little hesitant to pay $200 or more for Avid support, only to find out that they will not be able to help.

Does anyone know of a resource for downloads (legally) and updates to legacy Avid systems? Or does anyone know what version of MC I would need to get the system up to OSx ?

Sorry to spin the way-back machine so far back here, but we are still dealing with a number of SD projects and could use the extra old-school avid.

man, I’d run it as is. You are entering no man’s land by tinkering with it today and it’ll run till the hardware croaks if ya just let it ride.

grinner is correct. you think that you are going to upgrade your Meridian system to OS-X. This is what will happen. NOTHING WILL WORK. You will screw yourself. This is how to get your AVID up to a modern operating system – GIVE THEM YOUR MONEY. Take your money that you have saved for your childrens education, and your retirement, and GIVE IT TO AVID. You dont’ like this fact ? Then take your Meridian system, and walk it over to the DUMPSTER, because no school will take your donation of a Meridian system as a tax writeoff. Follow Grinner’s advice. Use it like it is, or THROW IT OUT. You are NOT going to succeed in updating the OS, so you can be compatible with modern operating systems (so you can accept modern graphics programs like Photoshop in modern OS-X format).

Are you angry – you should be angry. AVID wants your money. They don’t care about you. Modern products like Blackmagic Decklink SDI cost $295. Why doesn’t AVID support products like this ? Because THEY HATE YOU. AVID is our industries equivalent to the assisted living facilities in the US. They dont’ care if they bleed you dry – they WANT ALL OF YOUR MONEY. My suggestion to you – use your wonderful expensive (for it’s day) AVID Meridian system under OS9, and learn another program from another manufacturer.

Wow, Bob! Some bold statements made here in the Avid forum.
While I don’t disagree with you, I can’t say I’d have the stones to put it out there in the Avid forum 😉

I get what you both are saying, and that is ultimately my backup plan. As I said, everything works fine right now, so I don’t NEED to upgrade.
But I was just hoping that someone knew of an “upgrade” path that might help my efforts.

I hope you guys realize that I will not be testing any upgrades without first backing up the current drive. That way I can always go back to the current configuration and enjoy my OS9 system. I’m no noob as far as Avid is concerned, and I know to be protected every step of the way.

    thanks for the input.

A fella was found in a burning bed.
He was covered in bad burns when they got him out of there. When asked how his bed cought on fire, he replied “I dunno, it was on fire when I laid down on it.”

Don’t lay on a burnin’ bed, man. Milk that old goat till there aint no more milk. Go swappin nipples and things can dry up on ya. I cold go on and on with analogies. My advice is to fire it up, hear the chime and go “sweeeet.”

Hey guys, just wanted to share the rest of my story with you.
I really hate when threads are left open ended.

All in all, it is a success story.
    I am now running MC 12.1.5 on a G4 with 10.2.8
All is good and stable with no crashes or conflicts.
It’s like dialing the way-back machine to 2003 and editing.

I managed to get the software from the Avid download site and also looked up the version compatibility for all of my hardware.
Can’t say it was a fast or easy process, but it is working well.
However, I still have the original OS9 drive with MC installed sitting on a shelf in the event of a major meltdown. Gotta have a backup plan.

Thanks for the advice and help guys.

BTW- Grin, it’s okay to play with fire as long as you have a bucket of water nearby 😉
    BACKUP EVERYTHING !!!!
