Old Film Dtock Footage
Hi,
I know the ‘how do I get an old film look’ has been done to death, but my query is slightly different. I basically want some film footage to use as an overlay – seems to work better then spending forever trying to tweak noise generators. I’ve got a couple of clips of stock footage but I need more and I can’t find anywhere to get them from. I really just mean someone has recorded some blank film passing through a crap projector. Anyone got some, or know where I can grab it from? Even stock footage places only have very short clips. Any help would go a long way.

This output is the most organic looking effects I have ever seen. Don’t give up on AE yet!

Hi James –
It may take a bit of a search, but if you go to Archive.org, there is a monumental collection of old films, which can be downloaded for free. Many of these have the real thing – old, cruddy sections of dirt and noise, countdowns, and more. As I say, it takes a search, but it’s worth it.

you can also create a dirt map using quicktime. create a movie the length you require, all black video.
Open it in Quicktime Pro, export your movie to another quicktime movie, and in the Movie Properties window select the Filter and look under Special Effects for Film noise….options for hair, scratches, dust, fading.Export your movie and import into AE to use as a dirt map.

Thanks for all the suggestions. The AE project looked great! A LOT of work went into that. Thats kind of what I meant – it takes so long to program something like that, that you might has well just overlay the real thing if you can find it. But hey, if someone else has done the project already… 🙂
Having a look at Archive.org, and it has a lot of cool stuff in it. Might be being a dumbass, but when you go to download the project the movie clips have their images in them (not surprising really) but then there is no project to download and the XML file won’t open…. I’ll keep having a look around – maybe its just the way this person is uploading, but a massive thanks for the heads up.
I’ve not used a dirt map before so I’ll have a dig and see what turns up. I did try using quicktime filters for all of that scratches and flecks etc straight on to the image. The generators seem to spaz out when you feed them HD footage, but will try this dirt map idea.
