  • Old fashioned problem. Converting 486 to 480 for FCP

    Hey There,

A client recently took delivery of an AJA Ki-Pro to replace their aging DVCam deck. They are running into issues however with the files ut is exporting. The AJA records the ProRes files as 720 x 486, but all of their legacy footage (and footage from cameras not recording to the AJA) is 720 x 480. When the footage is converted in Compressor it seems to be a bit “jaggie” compared to the original source material.

I know this is a problem from about 6 years ago, but any help for an SD editor in an HD world would be very much appreciated!

What are you converting to in Compressor?

Is your sequence ProRes or DV-NTSC?

    I’m not totally across the 480 / 486 issues,

but in compressor you do have the option of PADDING to the source ratio
look in the geometry pane of the inspector.

this will ad 6 lines of black spread across top & bottom, and there will be no re-sizing on the original image

    No need to convert nothing.
Drop the 720×486 stuff on the 720×480 sequence.
FC knows how to manage the 6 lines cropping.
