Ok to delete .mxf files once imported to FCP?
We just switched to the P2 workflow with the purchase of the HPX.
Currently, I copy the raw P2 data onto 2 separate external Hard Drives. Drive #1 is for back up and drive #2 will contain the FCP project file etc.
When I import the raw P2 data into FCP… what is the downside of deleting the original .MXF files from the project drive? Otherwise the footage is taking up double the space on the drive.
Any thoughts or recommendations? Thanks!

As long as you have it backed up somewhere, you can throw away the MXFs on your FCp scratch drive. You wouldn’t completely throw away your tapes after you captured them, would you?

Use a program such as MXF4mac so you don’t have to log and capture, especially if you shoot/edit P2 all the time like we do.

The downside is you no longer have a “master tape.” What would be the downside to tossing or erasing tapes after you captured them? Same thing. Keep the originals. On a separated drive that you archive.
