I posted a few days ago about my Acer with an Intel i5 processor stuttering in the Preview window when trying to view a simple crossfade.

The consensus seems to be that the i5 processor cannot handle that. I also tried another set of clips and the same thing happened.

My question at this point is, will upgrading to an Intel i7 help with this? I was also researching, and there’s something called a Quad i7. Are all i7’s Quad processors, or is a Quad i7 different than a regular i7 processor?

And if so, can I get a Quad i7 for my Acer laptop, and will it make a difference?

I’m obviously not a hardware person.

    Thanks for your help.

    The i5 can/should manage a simple crossfade.
Even money says you’ve not got your laptop optimized. Even my clunky old Macbook 1.83 running BootCamp handles Xfades with AVCHD or HDV without issues.
    Background apps? Antivirus?

Either way…a faster/quad proc will be better, and yes…they’re available.

    Douglas:

    I’m so glad you responded!

I’m actually going through your Vegas Movie Studio HD training DVDs now! I just finished the Audio section on the second DVD, after finishing the first DVD yesterday. They’re very helpful.

“Even money says you’ve not got your laptop optimized.”

How do I get my laptop optimized? I do have AVG anti-virus running in the background.

Can you get Quad i7’s for laptops, or are they just for desktops? Maybe I ought to consider that, then.

As Spot said, even an i5 should have no problems with simple edits, even with AVCHD, which usually requires the fastest processor you can get.

The first thing I would do is:

Open Control Panel, System. Click on “Advanced system settings” then under “performance” click on “Settings”.
In the “Visual Effects” tab, select “..best performance”.
In the “Advanced” tab, select “Adjust for best performance of Programs”.

Click on “Apply” and “OK” your way back out.
