  • Ok Really DUMB Question, Where is the video???

    Ok,

    This is a stupid question:

As I load video into FCP where does it go? I see my HD space dropping so I know it’s being saved, but to where? I’m in OSX 10.4.

I want to copy all the video onto an external firewire drive, as I need to load about 8 hours of DV.

(I Premiere it appears as separate named files where ever you save it, and you can move it around.)

    Thanks
    Richard

Find your “Final Cut Pro Documents” folder. In there, you will find the “Capture Scratch” folder, and within that, folders pertaining to your project names. That’s where you’ll find your QT files.

You could always use the Media Manager in FCP – might be safer than poking around at file level. It will let you copy or move the files in your project to wherever you like – no mess, no fuss.

    Ahh, right ok got it.

Once they are moved you have to tell FCP where you put them and re-save the proj.

Tell me more about this media manager? What are the steps to follow exactly to get the video where it needs to go?

I’d avoid the Media Manager when you can. Simply drag all the folders from your Final Cut Pro documents folder to the external drive. When they are done copying, then throw the files from your main hard drive to the trash. FCP will ask where the files are, and if you tell it to SEARCH for them, it will fine them and reconnect all of them.

Then…open up the SYSTEM SETTINGS in FCP, under the FCP menu. Set your scratch disk to the external. The next time you capture it will then capture the files to that external hard drive.
