    Hey guys,

Just got a new network graphics package from a client. For whatever reason, the network font was not supplied and we were told which one to buy, and I bought the appropriate mac version. Once the fonts were installed, I opened the project, upgraded the project to CS4 (it was built in CS3), and am greeted with this message:

“The following layer dependencies are missing:
Text Layer: Font family: ‘AauxProOT’, Font style: ‘Bold’
Text Layer: Font family: ‘AauxProOT’, Font style: ‘Regular’
Text Layer: Font family: ‘AauxProOT’, Font style: ‘Thin’

The result: it looks for a slightly different named font and does not see the one I installed (I’m assuming that’s what that message means). This means that I’m going to have to change the font name for every single text layer in the package, which could take hours and hours.

Is there a workaround to batch adjust the problem I’m having? Can I rename the font in the fontbook to match the exact name? Other vendors are having this issue, but not all, so I’m stumped.

Also, I just checked by opening the original project in CS3 and it happens there, too, so this is not a CS4 issue.

    Thanks,
    John

I’ll try to be optimistic and say that I’m sure someone will have a happier answer for you, but in the meantime, this is what I’ve experienced pretty consistently working in AE on both platforms for quite a few years now …

I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know in saying that the best solution by far is to do whatever you can to get the font file that the package was designed with emailed to you, but I do realize how difficult some people can make the simplest things so …

The issue is that there are so many variations of the same fonts on the market that, even if you buy the “same” font, its unlikely you’ll get an exact match unless you buy the exact same set from exactly the same place … if the client could provide that info, they’d surely find it easier to just include a font folder with the other source materials (a standard practice of the good ole days).

If it was built on the same platform you’re working with it on, it’s just a matter of finding the same version of that font … raid every machine of that platform you can get your hands on til you find the right version of that font.

If the package was built on one platform and you’re working with it on the other, most of the time you’ll have to replace all the text one-by-one … I’ve heard of people writing scripts to do that, but have never personally witnessed it work successfully.

I typically avoid font issues so I actually only read your post because the title sounded like a a song about fonts or something. ;~)
You know, “Oh font, where art thou” or something like that. ;~)

Thanks Dave, turns out not to be so bad. Whoever built this project was using an Open Type version of the font rather than a TTF or Post Script, so when I installed the Mac download of the font from t26.com, it wasn’t seeing the Open Type and wouldn’t connect to the font.

A quick email to tech support there got me an OT version of the font I needed. Problem solved!

Totally off topic, but my dyslexia confused me completely on seeing Dave Johnson and John Davidson in a row on the forum. I first thought someone was just speaking to them self..

Crap. I was hoping this issue wasn’t going to turn out to be such an easy fix (no offense John). We’re having a similar situation, but the fix only works when the OS is the same. Cross-platform the font issues rears it’s ugly head again. Some fonts will just flat out not work on the PC (XP & Vista) when they install correctly on the Mac. In our situation it’s necessary for all three platforms to perform correctly, but font interpretation is different. A simple Find & Replace [font name] would be a god send at this point… I’ll continue to hope that fonts die an ugly death.
