    Hi Everyone

I’m working with a director who is doing rough cuts in FCP7. These offlines he’s working with are low-rez masters that were created from FCPX compound clips that sync’d all the camera angles, sound, etc.

I received his FCP7 file, used 7toX to bring it into X. Beautiful. Now I need to exchange these footage clips with the compound clips so I can get to choosing camera angles.

I can’t use the replace media process, as the compound clip is not “media” per se. All I can do is drag the compound clip over the existing footage for a replace. When I do, it does not start at the right spot (start or end) and I lose the ins and outs.

Am I missing a part of the workflow?

    Thanks!

I’m going to respond to my own post with a fix that is working well in case someone else is having the same workflow:

Select the offline clip in the timeline.
Right Click > Open in Timeline
Drag the compound clip above the online footage.
Go back to the main timeline.
Explode the clip (Shift Control G)
Your compound clip is now there on your timeline. You can explode it further when it’s time.

We’re doing another feature film (this is our second with FCPX) and this offline process tied with the compound clips is going to work great.

    Thanks!

How exactly are you performing the replace? Are you using replace from Start or End when you drag the compound onto the clip?

    Thanks for writing Andy.

Neither Start from Beginning or End is syncing up the compound clip with the media clip when dragging and dropping onto it. The media is the exact length.

I was sure hoping I could just do a drag and drop like normal. What do you think could be the issue?

Well, FCPX’s compound clips aren’t bullet proof (though they’re getting better). I suspect the issue lies with the translation of 7toX. Going out to FCP7 and then back into X has X confused about the IN/OUTs of the timeline clips.

The workflow is a little strange to me. I don’t understand why FCP7 is involved at all unless your director is just so uncomfortable with FCPX he can’t even work with it. I’d chalk it up as a good argument for keeping everything in one system.

You hit the nail on the head. Old laptop, used to FCP7, “just a rough cut” – you know. Offlines drive me nutz.

I am hoping to put together a FCPX system together for him soon, but just don’t know how much he will be involved. Often he gives me paper cuts.

    Thanks!
