  • Offline Format (recompress) for HD Editing FCP 5.1

Posted by Leif on July 27, 2006 at 8:46 pm

I’m editing an HD project in FCP 5.1 (720p 23.98). I’m wondering if there’s a way to “re-compress” my master clips via Media Manager to a more “off-line” friendly format. I’ve run some tests using Offline RT HD and DV NTSC anamorphic and while FCP does convert the clips, the Time code is not the same as the original HD clips (seems to be off by several frames). Needless to say, this is very unsettling.

Anyone have experience w/ off-line workflow of HD projects?

    Thanks for any help.

    Hi Shane.

My HVX-200 is set to shoot 720p/24p. I’m importing to FCP 5.1 using “Import/Panasonic p2”.

No need really to make that offline. DVCPRO HD is a very easy to edit format that doesn’t take up all that much space. 22MB/hour…about double what DV takes. I have 70 hours worth on two 500GB G-Raids and an internal SATA drive. and you can build a SATA Raid pretty cheaply.
