I apologize if this has been covered in previous posts, but I checked the FCP forum and couldn’t find anything similar to what I’m looking for. I’m starting an edit shot with F900 at 23.98 HDCAM…. I was planning on capturing via my Kona 3 in Pro Res HQ and cut on my work station, but I have to make an unexpected trip and want to do an off line edit on my Mac Book Pro (2.5 Intel) while I’m on the road. My question is……. what is the best work flow? I can add all the graphics and effects when I get back, I really just want to get a rough cut in the can. My plan was to…..
    1. Capture the footage on my work station in Pro Res. on the raid.
    2. Import footage into a FCP project.
    3. Export and recompress the footage via Media Manager as RT-HD files onto a firewire 800 drive.
    4. Cut the project and reconnect to original footage when I return.
Will this work? Will the FW Drive handle the RT clips?

    Any input would be appreciated!

I would suggest that you use Compressor to make ProRes SQ files in standard definition. They’ll run fine on an intel laptop with a FireWire drive. Plus, Compressor will compress them quite a bit faster than the media manager. Just make sure you keep the names the same.

I did the same before…but I used the Media Manager to recompress to OFFLINE RT HD and cut using my laptop hard drive. Then I reconnected to the master footage when I got back, and had to adjust the sequence settings to match.

How portable do you need to be?

Sonnet make an eSata card that slots into the macbook pro, so you could run the media at full res from a striped disk array. It’s slightly heavier than firewire drives, as you need the disk enclosure, but it doesn’t take up much more space.
