Playback on MY Macbook Pro with the Official Release of Premiere Pro CS6.

Not so good. Stuttering and choppy playback at full res. When using the software MPE the result is much more fluid, many more frames played back at full res.

Also…DO NOT switch between software and GPU acceleration in the “Project Settings” the program will freeze and you will need to force quit and loose any unsaved work.

Open CL does not/can not render a full res preview. The timeline responds with a choppy playback when “render effects in work area” is selected.

I am getting render errors when using Open CL. Ultra Key “misses” some of the green screen on the first few seconds of footage. Software render is clean. When Open CL is used render times appear to be arbitrary for the same footage same effects. 50 second render then a 1:20 render, then 1:08, then 1:32. No rhyme or reason.

    Not ready for primetime.

I did purchase the upgrade yesterday before the discount was discontinued. This was based on a moderator reply that Open CL maybe was not ready during the unofficial trial period(two days ago). Well there has to be an update soon then.

Worse than I initially thought. This software should be pulled and finished before it is released into the wild.

I tried some longer clips. Crop, Ultra Key, 3-way cc.

    MPE only, 2:20
    Open CL, 4:29

Definitely not ready. Open CL gives choppy playback at Full res and Half Res WITH rendered effects.

MPE plays back much more smoothly with the same footage and rendered or not, MPE plays back better.

The biggest disappointment for me so far is the “new” 3-way color corrector. While slightly better than the previous version it’s still pretty bad. Why can’t anyone make a good 3-way CC like FCP7 or Colorista? This just means I will have to use 3rd party plug-ins for basic CC in PPro. Of course there is Speedgrade but it’s not always practical to leave an NLE during a session.

This is the first iteration of Premiere Pro using GPU acceleration using OpenCL, and there is still room for improvement. We’re working with our partners to make the OpenCL acceleration better. I can’t make specific promises about whether and when updates might be released, but I can say that you should stay tuned for news.

    What GPU are you using?

Tell us more about your hardware, your source media, and how you’re using it.

    Hardware Overview:

    Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro8,3
    Processor Name: Intel Core i7
    Processor Speed: 2.3 GHz
    Number of Processors: 1
    Total Number of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
    L3 Cache: 8 MB
    Memory: 16 GB
    AMD Radeon HD 6750M

Using MTS footage from Sony NEX7. Shot on green screen. The results with Open CL are for less than optimal, I should have upgraded my PC Master Collection instead of my Mac Production Premium. The system runs fine(except for the crashing and freezing), just no speed improvements on MacBook Pro.

I am having similar problems on my 17″ MBP as well

    AMD 6750 1024MB

I however get great playback for a random amount of time and then for whatever reason the OpennCL performance plummets where I cannot get better then 10fps on even 1/4 res display. Switching to software only fixes the problem and I get decent playback again. Restarting CS6 makes the OpenCL work well again for another random amount of time.

When the open CL works it is pretty darn slick although not by as much as our CUDA friends from my understanding. I was glad to get the extra performance however if it can only be stabilized I would be very happy. With OpenCL I can get AVCHD at full quality with two clips using a blend mode, cross dissolve and one gpu filter all with a single title track. Playback drops frames when I use my second monitor for output but thats a lot of junk going on in that timeline.

I’m sure at some point OpenCL support will get better. For now I’m fine using software mode since it even seems to be faster then the software mode in CS5.5.

There’s information here about OpenCL processing and other GPU acceleration in Premiere Pro CS6: https://adobe.ly/Je20M2

Note the part toward the end about how updating software now or in the near future is the best way to get the best performance and stability with OpenCL in Premiere Pro CS6.

We can’t make promises about the future, but… well, stay tuned.

I was just thinking here that since my OpenCL seems to be working very well for a X amount of time could my MBP be shifting the gpu to the stupid Intel GPU after awhile which would really mess up gpu acceleration? Only Apple has this annoying feature of switching gpu’s on the fly as they are needed. This may explain why when I first launch CS6 my OpenCL performance is great and then all of a sudden it just drops after a X amount of time.

Mac OSX v10.7.4 update improves OpenCL performance. See this for details of OpenCL in Premiere Pro CS6: https://adobe.ly/Je20M2

Regarding the computer switching from GPU to Intel graphics chipset: Check your power management settings and make sure that you’re not switching to the power-conserving mode that uses the less powerful GPU.
