We had to dump some hard drives at the retail level. So I have $600 as a store credit to use but… I want to get the most bang for the bucks….. The spread between retail and web makes it tough, for example we saw an on sale camera that I searched out for $130 cheaper online. I just wanted some insight on what hardware they sale that might be most competitive. A little disparity is fine because the drives are off my hands, I just want to get the best deal I can. I never buy retail so I just wanted a hint. At this point I am figuring I can just check the weekly specials…..

Make a list of what you would like to upgrade the most, and like you said keep an eye on the specials, is there a finite time period you need to spend this in?

I have a year or so and then after that fees start eating into it, so I have time. At this moment I am contemplating my next set up but for the time being I have to get more milage out of my existing axe. I just need to do as you have confirmed that I should do, triage this set up and the next one and check specials, I suppose I can also use it as a king of insurance as well in case I need something new for a specific project. The hard part for me with hardware is it always pays to wait, buy something now and have it obsolete before Christmas… it takes all of the fun out of impulse buying. Balancing recklessness and caution all while meeting deadlines, who said editing was not an adventure….

Its always very tempting to get the latest and greatest, its hard to do but I forced myself to wait, if its going to be a system it going to be around for a while and its hard to justify a high price for a low performance increase, so six months or so helps in the pocket.
