odometer-style number roll
Posted by Scott Clark on October 19, 2009 at 8:50 pmHi folks, just wondering if there’s a good (simple) way to do this in Vegas.. I need a set of numbers to roll from, say, 9,995 up past 10,000 but I’m experiencing a bit of brain-lock. How would you achieve this effect?

October 19, 2009 at 11:57 pmWithin Vegas itself, the only ‘counters’ I’m aware of are the Timecode video FXs, but they’re only designed as timers and so aren’t great as general purpose counters (although you can do some weird stuff with them by rendering some Timecode as a .avi file then changing its speed or reversing it etc).
Personally I’d use a 3rd party product like Particle Illusion, which does include a couple of counter generators. After Effects may well do something similar.

October 20, 2009 at 3:11 pmJust to expand on using the Timecode FX… this should get you close:
- Start a new project
- Right-click the timeline ruler and select Absolute Frames
- Right-click the timeline ruler again and select Set Time at Cursor and enter 9995
- Add a Sony Timecode FX to the Video Output FX (above the video preview)
- Set the Timecode format on the Timecode FX to Absolute Frames
You now have a counter. You’ll need to render this to a video file so that you can mask the “.000” part. What you will have left are numbers that count up from 9,995.
