  • Odd problem with aspect ratio’s; render as PAL dv widescreen makes it 4:3

    Hello, I am working since shortly with Vegas 10 and I have some across a strange problem that I don’t know what I should do with it.

    The problem is simple;
    I make a project in the settings of PAL DV Widescreen; 720×576 aspect ratio; 1.46 or in Vegas’s mind; 1.4568.
    The preview shows my project correctly and I continue working.

    When finishing and rendering I come across the same problem all the time; I render as a quicktime, first thing I noticed in 10 is that there is no preset for DV PAl Widescreen, only Dv-pal (1.09 aspect ratio) or square pixel which uses a different size.

    Somehow even if I change the aspect ratio manually it switches back to 4:3 when I hit render.
    What I tried: I tried rendering with under presets; use project settings, custom (changing the aspect ratio etc. to match to project by hand).

    What happens; In the end I have a video in which the aspect ratio seemingly switched back or changed again. Everything is cramped into a small 4:3 screen.

    This is very annoying, I did multiple renders etc.
    I am going to see if it also happens with other formats but using quicktime can give a small filesize without quality loss.

    edit:

    I am adding some info, I took these render settings; dv pal, set to 1.457 aspect ratio. The preview showed the file being played as widescreen, afterward I opened the file in quicktime it was again 4:3, I imported it into a widescreen composition in AEF just to be sure and nope still 4:3

    here are the settings I used;

    My own project settings use the same aspect ratio, height/width and fields.

    edit 2:
    I tried rendering as mpeg-2 and it seems that the problem does not happen if I use that format.
    Though I really wonder why quicktime is being such a pain about it, is it common, is there a solution?
    I didn’t have this in the older Sony Vegas’s before, what is the cause?

    The problem is that QuickTime has no idea how to handle any pixel aspect ratio other than 1.0000! So you must do the math in order to get your video correct in QuickTime.

    720 x 1.4568 = 1049

    Set your render to:

    1049×576 PAR 1.0

    and QuickTime will display your PAL Widescreen video correctly. MPEG2 doesn’t have this limitation which is why it looked correct.
