I’m about to make the purchases for a Mac Pro Octocore-based system. I’m considering whether I need to budget for an Isobox other other such enclosure. For those of you who use this computer, is it very noisy? Do you use an Isobox (or similar)? I’ve spoken with two editors who say they are much happier working with their Octocore machine enclosed.

It depends on if you need to record sound in your studio and what the temp is in your studio, but I find it is no louder than a g5 and most of the time, much more quiet.

FYI, I have such a cabinet for my G5 and another for the RAID, and although they work quite well I can never completely shut the front or rear cabinet door– because the big issue is heat removal. So make sure your cabinet has a temp gauge, and the edit room needs to be frigid.

Better yet, move the computer and all hard drives outside the edit suite. That’s what we did with our two main suites. Only the computer displays, video and audio monitors are in the actual suites.

I want to do this SO badly in my rooms, but my roommates say NOOO we want our linen closet, to hell with that, I want an extra 3 cubic feet of room for my legs!!

but seriously Unless you have a ventilated box/cabinet you would be fine, my quad is VERY quiet. The loudest thing you can do is run a disk in it, or burn one.

When we moved into our new facility I had no choice but to isobox the G5 quad in our edit room. Even with the cpu cooling system replacement which made it MUCH quieter its still too loud and we close the door on the isobox when clients are in.

as long as you have intake vents and a powerful but quiet vent fan your all set.

Don’t worry about a temp gauge on the box, just monitor your mac temp when you set it up to make sure its fine with the setup.
