Occasional Problem with x264, blacks breaking up
I love using x264, it gives me great results, much better video quality than h264 at the same bitrate. BUT, occasionally I have an issue with some of my video encodes, and it appears to have something to do with the blacks. h264 doesn’t have an issue with it. I’m using Mpegstreamclip on a Mac to facilitate the encode. Here are some screen shots of what I’m getting in screen shots below, x264 version first, then h264 version, with settings below that.

x264 component version?Note that development stopped on the Quicktime component over a year ago.

Test using Handbrake and see how that handles it. It also uses x264.

I’d do some generalized testing:
Bump the data rate to something huge in x264 – See if the problem is due to the data rate. Play with the i Frames as well.
What’s likely happening is that it’s not doing a great scene detection and not dropping an I frame at the cut (which is likely causing the problem.)
It may be time to go to a better framework around the encoder – Episode and Squeeze both have access to x264 and they also have support teams.

Just to follow up to my own question (in case anyone else has the same issue). I discovered that the problem only occurs with Mac OS Quick Look function in the finder. When I view the video in a stand alone player, such as Quicktime or VLC, I see no problems with the video. This may be a problem with the decoding function of the latest Quicktime (v8?). But as a side note, I know this is not specifically isolated to just Quicktime. I sent a spot to a cable outfit (which I know is PC based) and they complained about the same problem. BUT, any video that shows this issue in the quicklook preview, I can upload to Youtube and it shows no problems whatsoever.
