Hi, as I novice, I’d like to know what is the process, after all audio tracks have been mixed, of obtaining uniform or average volume throughout the entire production? Ie, we don’t want parts too loud and parts too low and aside from listening by the ear, there must be some measured way of getting the best result. What is that way? Thanks

I usually use a volume envelope to adjust the levels as needed. You also have the normalize tool which you could apply to individual clips.

The Mixer window reads out the total volume as you play. If you don’t see it go to View>Mixer.

If you have already mixed several sources, the easiest way to control overall volume over time is to apply a volume envelope on the master track (hit B to bring that up).

As an AUDIO guy in general, I’ve mixed, edited and mastered some major label projects. In Vegas, I almost always use Wave Hammer on my master audio buss. I’ve come to like it more than L1 Maximizer from Waves. There are some great outboard gear pieces, too. However, the most valuable tool when it comes to audio mastering is your ear. Be careful when viewing waveforms on your video monitor, even though they look like they are at a lower level they may not be based on frequency, instrumentation, pitch, etc. Make sure you are sampling different sections of audio portion of your project.
