  • Objects moving around in between Position keyframes with the same data?

Posted by Adam Sakellarides on December 13, 2006 at 6:11 pm

I need an object to move, then stay in one place for a while, then move again, then stay in one place for a while, etc…

My problem is, when I copy and paste the keyframes to get the object to stay still from one point to the next… instead, it wiggles a little… in fact, it’s creating some weird motion path in between, making it wiggle in between the keyframes with the same position data…. why? How can I fix this? How can I prevent this?

You need to check out a couple of tutorials here on the COW, little Buckeroo!

Look for Aharon Rabinowitz’ AE Podcasts, specifically the ones called “AE Boomerang Effect”. They have exactly the information you want.

Change the first keyframe to a hold keyframe. (Right-click on the keyframe, choose Keyframe Interpolation.)

This is a classic issue that Chris and Trish Meyer address in their excellent book, Creating Motion Graphics in After Effects. Unfortunately, I let a co-worker borrow my copy so I don’t have the explanation handy as to WHY this happens in some cases. But Hold keyframes exist for this exact purpose.

Thanks for responding. Actually, Dave LaRonde pointed out the video podcasts… you should check out the one about the “Boomerang Effect.” Great stuff, eh?

    I love the Cow/Calf.
