  • Object on end of a string – Cool Idea; How to Execute?

    Hey guys,
I have a question that’s not so much a pressured troubleshoot.
i have a great idea but no where to start. Motion behaviors behave so violently inconsistent
that I’ve lost a lot of trust in them.
    The idea is simple:
I want to have an object (say, a rectangle) drop from the “ceiling” on a string that draws taught
whenever the object reaches the end of the string. I want it to pop with some realism, causing
the object to shake and spin.
I’m thinking of when someone drops a necklace while still wrapped around one finger.
That *snag* and sway that happens is what I am looking for.
I appreciate you guys so much for your help. You are all awesome.
Thank you for any advice you can give on behaviors and all things Motion.

You might try the Spring simulation behavior to get started.

Can you give an example of a behavior acting “violently inconsistent”? I’ve never seen that.

Check out my Particle Party tutorial. I think it can get you a step in the right direction. Best of luck.

Yeah, I can check out Spring, that’s a good idea.
Has anyone ever made a physical string, that moved like one, in Motion?

“violently inconsistent” or just not working at all despite parameters being adjusted.
Quantize has never worked for me. I always result to a Strobe filter. In this instance
it was pretty effective. I liked the result https://vimeo.com/14071790 – the black shapes.
    ///
I’ll check out Particle Party for getting instructions on how to do this then tell you
what I think. I haven’t had a chance to look at it yet.

Thank you guys for your help!

[Landon Satterfield] “Has anyone ever made a physical string, that moved like one, in Motion?”

It’s fairly straightforward to make a swinging pendulum out of a solid line, but do you want a string that will go slack or taut in a realistic way? If so, not sure how you’d do that in Motion without tediously having to hand-animate points on a Bezier shape.
