NYC Stash Bash was huge
Nothing beats viewing motion graphics on the big screen.
Tonight, there were speakers both from Psyops
and a fresh, original new 3d company, 1st Ave Machine.1st Ave Machine walked us through the making of one of their
projects – robots walking through ordinary crowds on city streets.
Not ordinary robots, these had quirky personality in the motion.
The video footage was handheld. It must have been a tracking
nightmare.Their 3d animations on live moving fauna – plants opening filled with
little eyes, fungi zapping out with 2 foot tongues was witty and
brilliant.Psyops took us through the making of a spot featuring bubbles
that moved to subtly form a human face, then dispersed.
They started with a drop dead gorgeous live model, then took
her head into 3d so that you could get a sense of moving through
the head in 3d space. No particles. Each bubble was hand-
crafted.There were a lot of great commercials in the mix of graphics
clips. The European spots were funny as hell. They
always stomp our generic spots.The museum exhibits before the event were fun, there is
an arcade in the lobby of games that go back to Donkey Kong.Stash treated everybody who registered with a free dvd, and
after the viewing, served drinks.It was an evening worthy of Semi Permanent, Res and Moov.
When we first got to NY a few years ago, the place was in the
midst of a bleak recession. The place was like a graveyard.It is heartening to see digital coming back to life here.

for a company as old as Psyops to remain at the cutting edge. I think they’re six, which in our field is the equivilent of 60. Normally, hotshops come in, then get pulled into more lucrative mundane work and burn out. The Psyops Sheryl Crow music video is the best design driven animation I”ve seen in years.
